This section provides answers to the most frequently asked questions about the Central Translation Bureau, its translation services, training programmes, regional training centres and other related activities. The information is intended to help visitors quickly find answers to common queries without the need for additional correspondence.
The Central Translation Bureau (CTB) was established on 1 March 1971 under the Ministry of Home Affairs. It was entrusted with translating non-statutory procedural literature of the Ministries, Departments, Offices and Public Sector Undertakings of the Government of India.
Since 1973, the Bureau has also been responsible for conducting translation training to ensure simplicity, consistency and uniformity in official terminology. It is the Government of India's standard institution for official translation and translation training.
The Headquarters of the Central Translation Bureau is located at Pandit Deendayal Antyodaya Bhawan, CGO Complex, Lodhi Road, New Delhi.
Besides the Headquarters, the Bureau operates Translation Training Centres at Bengaluru, Kolkata and Navi Mumbai to provide training across different regions of the country.
The Bureau conducts a five-day short-term translation training programme on request from Government offices.
Officers and employees engaged in translation work or the implementation of the Official Language Policy may participate. These programmes are generally organized at the requesting office or under the Official Language Implementation Committee.
Advanced Translation Training Programmes are organized for Hindi Officers, Official Language Officers and officers of higher ranks. These programmes are conducted at the Headquarters in New Delhi.
Refresher Training Programmes are organized for translators and personnel associated with Official Language implementation who have already completed the Bureau's three-month or thirty-working-day translation training programme.
The Regional Translation Training Centres provide translation training to Hindi Officers, translators and officials involved in Official Language implementation. These centres conduct induction and refresher training programmes to meet the increasing demand from Government offices across the country.
Hindi Officers, translators and officials associated with the implementation of the Official Language Policy in Ministries, Departments, Public Sector Undertakings and nationalized banks of the Central Government are eligible.
Participants should possess graduate-level knowledge of Hindi and English or demonstrate equivalent proficiency required for official work.
No. All translation training programmes conducted by the Central Translation Bureau are provided completely free of cost.
Yes. Hostel accommodation is available for trainees attending programmes at the Delhi Centre.
The hostel is located at Sector-7, Pushp Vihar, New Delhi – 110017.
Yes. The top three participants in the Preliminary (30 Working Days) Translation Training Programme receive Gold, Silver, and Bronze Medals for outstanding performance.
The programmes are conducted by Assistant Directors serving as permanent faculty members.
In addition, Joint Directors, Deputy Directors, experienced Government officers, retired experts and distinguished academicians from universities and language institutions are invited to deliver special lectures.
Yes. Besides Hindi Translators and Hindi Officers, Government employees associated with translation work or Official Language implementation may also participate, provided they possess graduate-level knowledge of Hindi and English or equivalent working proficiency.
Yes. A certificate examination is conducted at the end of the Preliminary (30 Working Days) Translation Training Programme.
Participants are awarded grades such as Excellent, Very Good, and Good. Outstanding performers also receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals.
Yes. Feedback is collected from participants at the conclusion of every translation training programme organized by the Central Translation Bureau.
