About the Department

The Department of Official Language was established in June 1975 as an independent Department under the Ministry of Home Affairs to monitor the implementation of constitutional and statutory provisions relating to the Official Language and to promote the progressive use of Hindi for the official purposes of the Union.

The Department promotes the use of Hindi through training programmes, Hindi typing and stenography, translation services, constitution of Hindi Advisory Committees, Town Official Language Implementation Committees (TOLIC), incentive schemes and annual implementation targets.

Though the Department primarily serves Government organizations and employees, its initiatives ultimately improve transparency and public service delivery by encouraging greater use of Hindi in official communication.
